Over the weekend yet another local family were plunged into darkness
after a young man tragically took his own life. No words of sympathy
will help ease their grief or numb the pain but his family and friends
remain in all of our thoughts at this hugely difficult time.
Since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement more people have taken
their own life here that died as victims of the entire Troubles. That
is a damming statistic and is further evidence of the huge issues of mental health here in Northern Ireland.
Northern Ireland has the worst rate of Mental Health problems in
Western Europe and the highest suicide rate in the U.K. Quite simply we
do no where near enough to help people suffering with poor mental
health or to tackle many of the underlying causes.
As a
society we must face up to the fact that mental health is as important
as physical health. There is no quick fix but I do fully support the
aims of the petition below, to see more money directed towards
addressing immediate pressures within mental health alongside calls for
specialist suicide crisis centres and a specialist mental health hub.
As politicians we have a duty to set aside our differences, stop the
petty point scoring and stand united in the fight for the things that
really matter. Quite simply there is a Mental Health Crisis in Northern
Ireland and we must do whatever we can to begin dealing with it. How
many more families have to suffer before we stand up and act?
Please sign the petition below and be one more voice for support in the fight for more mental health resources in NI.
