John Stewart, Ulster Unionist Infrastructure spokesperson and MLA for East Antrim has welcomed news that the North Road in Carrickfergus will be resurfaced this summer.
John Stewart MLA said:
"Finally after much lobbying and many complaints to DFI Roads Service about potholes and surface damage on the North Road, they have now announced that they will be carrying out resurfacing works starting after the school s break for the summer holidays at the end of June. North Road has been given the go-ahead to be resurfaced from Middle Rd to Prince Andrew Way.
"Roads across East Antrim and Northern Ireland in general are in an extremely bad state of repair. This is due both to long term under investment and also the impact of recent cold weather. My office has reported scores of potholes brought to our attention, but even when they are eventually patched, it is only a temporary fix. Long term, it is more cost effective to invest in proper resurfacing schemes- like the one announced on the upper part of the North Road.
"As part of the consultation process for the 2018/19 budget I made the case for greater priority to be given to roads maintenance. This was acknowledged in the additional resource that has been set for the Department for Infrastructure, Roads. So, I am glad to see that some much needed resurfacing schemes are being announced.
"It has to be said though, that there is a vast backlog of roads needing maintenance and attention. There are many other stretches of roads which DfI Roads know need resurfacing. The stretch between Northlands and Drumhoy is just one such example. It will take time and a consistent level of investment to get our roads network back to the state which people rightly demand and expect.
