Ulster Unionist Councillor & PCSP member John Stewart
has asked people to remain vigilant against the continued threat of commercial
and domestic burglary in Carrickfergus.
Reacting to latest crime statistics for the last 12 months the UUP
Deputy Mayor commented “Although crime across the Borough is down year on year
it is still very alarming that Carrickfergus has on average nearly 3 victims of
burglary per week and a clearance rate of only 9%, people need to be aware and
stay vigilant.”.
Recent figures published by the PSNI show a drop in overall
crime in Carrickfergus and improvements in the number of clearances by the
police. The statistics for burglary
between 1st April 2013 and 20th February 2014 report a
total of 129 burglaries in the town with only 12 cases be resolved. Councillor Stewart adds “I welcome the work to
PSNI and PCSP have done to help combat crime locally and comparatively speaking
Carrickfergus remains one of the safest places in the country. However it is important that we draw
attention to the threat of burglary in the Borough and remind people to be on
guard. Scarcely a week passes without
contact from a constituent who has suffered a break in and the story is becoming
all too familiar. I would ask people to
be sensible, keep doors and windows locked, report suspicious activity in the
area and look out for your neighbours. If
there is not already a neighbour watch scheme in your area then look into
starting one, I would be happy to assist anyone with this. Finally if you do have concerns or want more
information on protecting property, the local PSNI crime prevention team have a
wealth of material and guidance”.
